SENIOR CAPTAIN’S ANNOUNCEMENTS
17TH JUNE 2023
Well, That’s more like it Honiton entertained Torquay on Monday 12th in a friendly match, our previous encounter left us 5-1 down and up against in this return leg, some words of encouragement lit a fire under our team, the response was magnificent and although we could not force a win over the two legs, we did manage a 5-1 victory to tie the two matches overall.

Some of you may have noticed my attendances at the club have reduced and my playing time will reduce, my 94 year old mother in law who has lived with us for several years has been placed on the palliative care path, and as such it has increased the pressure on my wife Kate who is the main carer and she needs me to spend more time at home to give support, I intend to play on Friday’s but will miss several friendly matches. I know you will give my Vice captain Neil Price your full support, I know he will be a good captain next year.
24th June 2023

Once again a Monday started of with a loss in our friendly match
against Cricket st Thomas, we had some very good players taking part
but we could not cope with the shots given to the opposition.
Tuesday saw us playing again at home against Dainton Park a real friendly bunch who enjoyed the day but maybe not the result, it leaves them looking to need a 5-1 win to take the overall result.
I have it on good authority John & Janet Higgins recently came 5th in the Dainton Park mixed open, well done to them.
Thursday saw Neil take the team to Taunton & Pickerage despite some good performances we went down 4.5-1,5.
Phil Wall our fixture secretary is standing down, he has been in the role for several years and we thank him for all he has done for the senior section, a volunteer in the form of John Pawley has offered to take on the role and will liase with Phil at the earliest opportunity.
I have of late had to ajudicate on matters regarding the Norman Barker and the Ronnie pew knockout competitions, please will all players play their m
atches within the stated time limits.

Well what a week of contrasting fortunes in our friendly matches we lost to Exeter in the home fixture, and they retained the Stan Parker Cup we then lost away to our new fixture at Bridport quite heavily. The team of Peter Clarke, John Jackson, David Scott, and Ron Graham a last minute volunteer played in the East Devon Pheasant fourball event and were first out to play, scoring a credible 82 pts it was never bettered and for the first time in its 7 years history Honiton were the winners

Again, a relative Quiet week with just two matches at home against Taunton & Pickerage and Axe Cliffe, Neil had the captaincy against T&P whilst I looked after Axe Cliffe. The game against Axe was a tight affair with most games going down to the wire, myself and Andy Manley who was solid throughout edged Richard Gibbons the captain for the day at Axe and Chris Alexander, who kept them in the game, mention must be made of Richard Orsman and Chris Shepherd who won 4&3, we won as a team 3.5-2.5 to avenge our defeat at Axe, so thank you to all our players who give up their time to play in these friendly matches, especially John Pawley who replaced John Craig who was too ill to play. JP showed his gratitude by winning the nearest the pin, hope you enjoyed the wine.

Earlier on in the week we entertained T&P led by Neil, another match with a close result, five of the matches were only decided on the 17th, one event to mention was Simon Ruben pitching in from 110 yards on the 9th for a magnificent eagle 3, helping the team out also was Chris Shepherd taking the nearest the pin on the eighth.

Honiton won the match 3.5-2.5 but could not make up the deficit from the game at T&P. Well done to all of you, they say it is the taking part that matters, but not when you get two victories in a week.

This week I received a resignation email from Phil Wall who has for several years carried out the duties of Secretary/Fixture secretary, Phil’s wife Di who has not been well for some time and he would like to spend more time with her, well I thank Phil for all he has done for the club and wish Di returns to better health. John Pawley has volunteered to take on the Fixture secretaries' role and I wish him the best. Mike Sennitt has been helping on the Secretarial role and I am awaiting his confirmation on him continuing to the end of my term of office, should they wish to continue in their roles next year they would need to be proposed and seconded and confirmed at the senior’s AGM next January.

The senior veterans cup cancelled today will now be played on August the 4th alongside the monthly medal competition.

Seniors Captain Announcement - 28th July, 2023

Whilst our Seniors Captain enjoys a well-earned holiday it is my pleasure to update you on events of the past week.

On Tuesday 25th July we secured a comfortable 5-1 victory in our friendly match at home to Churston G C. We were victorious over the two legs by 7 matches to 5. Well done to all who contributed.

On />Seniors Captain Announcement - 4th August, 2023

A relatively quiet week for the Seniors this week which was probably not a bad thing considering how bad the weather has been.

We had just one friendly fixture, at home to Tiverton, and the team achieved a creditable 4 to 2 win. Well done and a big thank you to all those who played, and we look forward to the return in early October.

On Friday we held the postponed Veterans Cup, and the course presented a real test with some challenging tee and pin positions. Several players were up to the challenge posting some good scores. In Division 2 George Blake led the pack with a nett 71 followed by Jon Kane and Graham Cumming who posted 72. In Division 1 Andy Manley took third place with 71 but both Paul Ritchie and Brian Thompson posted nett 70. It was Paul who narrowly took the victory and trophy on count back. Congratulations to Paul and to Brian…unlucky, there’s always next year!

Finally, please note that Devon will be on holiday for much on next week. Consequently, the running order for the monthly Stableford on 18th August will be posted on BRS a little later than usual on the preceding Monday, the 14th.

Seniors Captain Announcement - 11th August, 2023

This week we had only one friendly fixture but what a fine result it produced. The team ably led by stand-in captain Peter Clarke registered a 4 ½ to 1 ½ win at Enmore Park. Well done, Peter and the team.

The Friday competition was a non-qualifying Individual Stableford with 3 Mulligans. Those who used their Mulligans most wisely were in Division 2 George Blake with 39 points who edged out Bill Phillips on countback. Topping Division 1 and overall winner was John Craig with 41 points with runner-up Sydney Martin on 39 points. In the twos competition, in contrast to last week’s sole winner, there were no fewer than seven winners sharing 28 balls. Special mention to Geoff Stone whose two came as an eagle on the 16th hole!

Seniors Captain Announcement - 18th August, 2023

On Tuesday 15th August the Honiton 3-man team of Neil Price, Ian Collier and Graham Cumming travelled to Downes Crediton to take on nine other teams in the Stan Setter Salver invitational. The team posted 77 points in the three ball Stableford, with two scores to count, and finished as the best visiting team to bring home the trophy. It was Honiton’s first success in the competition for 22 years.

This week’s Friday competition of a monthly Stableford was abandoned as the fog came down and the course closed by early afternoon. Frustrating for some who seemed to play better in the fog!

A reminder that the Henry Young Open takes place on 1st September. Anyone who is available to help on the day and can enter their name on the sheets displayed on the locker room noticeboard.

Neil Price, Seniors Vice-Captain

CAPTAINS ANNOUNCEMENTS

Well, it's nice to be back from holiday, whilst it was very good, I came back for a rest. Monday sees the senior’s taking on Cricket St Thomas on their own turf report to follow. Firstly I must congratulate the team of Neil Price, Ian Collier and Graham Cumming for their excellent win in the Stan Setter competition held at Crediton last Tuesday, this was the 1st time in 22 years that Honiton have won the salver. I was given several queries on my return dealing with early starts, the eclectic competition and a ruling on a player hitting his own head with his golf ball whilst getting out of a bunker, it takes all sorts, well our 5-game winning streak came to a halt at cricket st Thomas, having beat us at Honiton 5-1 they replicated the score at CST, the usual friendly banter started on the golf course and continued at the dining table, we are all looking forward to next year.

Covid has reared its ugly head again, so please take care when in a large company of people indoors.

Today the competition was a 4ball pairs game, the results were excellent, when you come in with 46pts and only a few groups to finish it would not be premature to think you in the frame for a 1st spot , however Dave Maggs and Paul Webber were edged out by Tom Stanton and David Hughes with a magnificent 48pts, there were whispers in the clubhouse about handicap adjustments all in good fun and well done to both of them, The twos of which there were only two, Peter Blake and Andy Manly, shared 28 balls.

Next Friday sees the Henry Young Open, would anyone who can offer a couple of hours of their time as we are a little short of volunteers to help on the day give me a call 07885794182.

The new system Intelligent golf is planned to go live next Thursday 31st August, please be patient in its initial stages, I am sure it will be beneficial in the long term.

I am sure Neil Price would not mind me confirming that Ian Collier has agreed to stand as his vice – captain next year, Ian will have a taste of captaincy having agreed to lead the team against East Devon on the 31st of August, neither Neil nor myself being available, we wish him well.
